In The News: A new finding
According to Mitochondrial Disease News, a new study found rare cases of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) being passed down from fathers in three unrelated families. The surprising findings could lead to novel treatments for inherited mitochondrial diseases, the scientists said.
Mary Kay Koenig, M.D., medical director of the UTHealth Mitochondrial Center of Excellence (not an author in the study), said of the finding:
“I think this is very exciting and could potentially lead to a better understanding of mtDNA transmission, hopefully providing new reproductive options for women harboring pathogenic mtDNA variants.”
