On January 11, 2013, the UT Mitochondrial Center of Excellence opened the worlds only operating Leigh syndrome clinic. The clinic is directed by Dr. Mary Kay Koenig and is dedicated to the care and research of patients with Leigh syndrome. This clinic will initially be held monthly, with the intention of growing to twice a month.
Leigh syndrome is a progressive neurometabolic disorder with onset in infancy or childhood, typically following a routine viral illness. These children often appear normal at birth but soon develop episodes of neurologic decline and other medical com-plications. There is no cure and currently, treatments are only partially effective. The Leigh syndrome clinic will allow for closer follow-up of these particularly vulnerable patients and allow for increased research opportunities.
